Started back in 1991, the Rwanda Orphans Project
helps children from families and also orphans in the capital city of
Rwanda, Kigali. After the Civil war which started in Rwanda in 1990,
many children fell victim to the AIDS epidemic that has led to the
huge number of orphans. The AIDS epidemic currently infects around
25% of the adults in the capital, but back in 1994 the genocide of
more than 800,000 Rwandese also resulted in many families being
without one or both parents. There are therefore currently many
hundreds of thousands of orphans who need support. It was this
dilemma of how to support these children and orphans that was the
inspiration for the Rwanda Orphans Project.
